Past Perfect Continuous and Past Perfect Tense (I had been going and I had gone)

Past Perfect Tense ve Past Perfect Continuous Tense bundan önceki derslerde detaylı olarak açıklandı. Bu konuda ise iki zamanın arasındaki kullanım farklılıklarına dikkat çekilecek ve böylece bu zamanların doğru kullanımı sağlanacaktır.

Aşağıdaki Past Perfect Continuous Tense ile yapılan cümleleri inceleyiniz.

- My mum had been expecting the news for a long time. (Annem uzun zamandır haber beklemektedir.)

- She had been running for two hours, and her feet hurt. (İki saattir koşuyormuş ve ayaklarını incitmiş.)

- Jack was arrested, even though he hadn't been doing anything illegal. (Jack illegal hiçbir şey yapmadığı halde tutuklandı.)

Gördüğünüz gibi Past Perfect Continuous Tense geçmişteki belirli bir zaman veya eyleme kadar veya belirli bir zaman veya eylemin hemen öncesine kadar devam eden eylemleri ifade etmek için kullanılmaktadır.

► Kullanım 1

Aşağıda Past Perfect Continuous ve Past Perfect Tense ile kurulmuş cümleler yer almaktadır. Örnek cümleleri okuyarak iki zaman arasındaki farkları görmeye çalışın.

- She had been suffering from headache when she was on TV. (Televizyona çıktığında başı ağrımaktaydı.)

- She had suffered from insomnia when she was very young. (Çok gençken uykusuzluk çekmişti.)

- I'd been finishing my homework in my room and hadn't seen Jack come home. (Odamda ödevimi bitirmekteydim ve bu yüzden Jack'in eve geldiğini görmedim.)

- I'd finished all my homework, so I had very little to do. (Bütün ödevlerimi bitirmiştim, yani yapacak çok az işim kalmıştı.)

- Sue had been saving since last year to buy a house. (Sue bir ev alabilmek için geçen seneden beri para biriktirmektedir.)
 
- John had saved enough money to buy the car he wanted. (John istediği arabayı alabilmek için yeterli parayı biriktirmişti.)

Yukarıdaki örneklerde görüldüğü gibi, Past Perfect Continuous tense bir eylemin veya durumun süresi ve devamlılığı üzerinde durulurken kullanılmaktadır. Past Perfect Tense ise geçmişteki bir eylem veya durumun bitmiş olması veya etkileri üzerinde durulurken kullanılmaktadır.

► Kullanım 2

Bazı durumlarda ise bu iki zaman arasındaki fark, yalnızca hangi anlama vurgu yapıldığına bağlı olarak değişebilir.

- I'd been working hard, so I felt that I deserved more money. (Çok sıkı çalışıyordum, bu yüzden daha çok parayı hakettiğimi düşündüm.)
Bu cümle anlam olarak eylem üzerine, yani çalışmak üzerine yoğunlaşıyor.

- I'd worked hard, and the report was now finished, (Çok sıkı çalıştım ama raporum şu anda bitmiş durumda.)
Bu cümle ise anlam olarak eylemin sonuçları üzerine yoğunlaşıyor.

► Kullanım 3

Eğer bir eylemin, geçmişteki belirli bir zamana kadar ne kadar sürdüğünden bahsediyorsak, yani süreç üzerine yoğunlaşıyorsak Past Perfect Continuous Tense kullanılır. Fakat eğer geçmişteki eylemin, yine geçmişteki başka bir eyleme kadar kaç kez tekrarlandığı üzerinde duruyorsak, bu kez Past Perfect Tense kullanırız.

- We hadn't been eating anything for about 10 hours. (10 saattir birşey yemiyoruz.)

- We had been looking at the women for about 20 minutes before we realised who she was. (Kim olduğunu anlayamadan önce yaklaşık 20 dakika boyunca kadına baktık.)

- I'd heard this proverb many timesbefore. (Bu atasözünü daha önce çok kereler duydum.)

• The teacher had given them bad marks after each exam. (Öğretmen her sınavdan sonra onlara kötü not vermişti.)

► Kullanım 4

Bazen durum belirten fiiller continuous tense ile kullanılmazlar. Bu gibi durumlarda bir eylemin geçmişte ne kadar sürdüğünden bile bahsediyor olsak, Past Perfect Tense kullanırız.

- I had always believed that it wouldn't be easy to get married. (Her zaman evlenmenin kolay bir şey olmadığına inandım.)

PAST PERFECT AND PAST PERFECT CONTINOUS TENSE

 

► We use the Past Perfect to indicate that a completed action happened earlier than something else.

By the time I was 14, my father had taught me how to drive a car.

When you arrived, I had already finished my meal.

 

► We use past perfect continuous tense when the action was not completed. 

Jane had been doing her homework for an hour when she suddenly noticed it was completely dark outside. (She didn't stop doing her homework when she looked outside.)

I had been talking on the phone when my dad came home. (I didn't hang up the phone when my dad came.)

 

► We use the past perfect continuous when we talk about the duration of an action or situation. But we use the past perfect tense to talk about the completion of an action or situation or its effects. Now compare the sentences below;

I had been suffering from flu when I first visited China
I had suffered from flu when I was 4 years old. 

 

I'd been cooking in the kitchen nd hadn't seen the thief broke into the house. 
I'd cooked for dinner, so I had some time to rest before the guests arrived.

 

► We often use past perfect or past perfect continuous just to put emphasis on the activity or the result. 

I'd been working on the project hard, so I felt that I needed a break. (emphasizes the activity)

I'd worked hard, and I was rewarded by the boss. (emphasizes the result)

 

► We use past perfect continuous to talk about how long something went on until a specific time in the past. But we use the past perfect to talk about how many times something happened until a specific time in the past. 

They had been running for about 20 hours. (Not "They had travelled")

We had been looking out of the window for about twenty minutes before we realised it was snowing. (Not "We had looked")
